pownce

I just received an e-mail from the guys from Pownce and the news is sad: they are shutting down the joint.

We are sad to announce that Pownce is shutting down on December 15, 2008. As of today, Pownce will no longer be accepting new users or new pro accounts.

Pownce, a multimedia competitor for Twitter, was an online tool for sharing text and photos, music and videos, using a nice Adobe AIR application. The two engineers – Leah Culver and Mike Malone – will go to Six Apart, the mother company.

What is nice about this closure is that they are providing the users with a nice tool for exporting the content.

Pownce was also one of the Web 2.0 websites with a very nice webdesign, being on the 5th place on the Mashable.com’s list of the most beautiful social networks.

A comparison between Pownce and Twitter at Tech Crunch and more info on Pownce’s blog.

sneakerplay

The second closure of the week was Sneakerplay, a social network with a rather bizarre audience – people who have a fetish for their sneakers. Users would post photos, info and poems about their sports shoes on the website. A narrow niche, I’d say…

I think it’s an example of the things you can build online. Maybe you don’t believe too much in the future of your network, but why not give it a try? Okay, it didn’t work, let’s move on.
