My amazing days continue. „Amazing” in the sense that I’m amazed every day. We had the interviews to select the new team for The Bullet. We got 25 applications, one person didn’t show up and we had to reject some of them, mainly because their English wasn’t so convincing. We have to get to work immediately and we can’t afford teaching English to people who mention in their CVs the English certificates they got.
Speaking of CVs, how can a 19 or 20-year old person can have a 3-page CV. I mean, even if I list all my publications, scholarships and grants, I can’t draft a CV of more than 5 pages. There is something about the new candidates: most of them want to show they are more than they are. OK, you mention in your cover letter that you see things that others don’t. So, when you’re asked how many statues are in front of the University building, you have to answer. Or, if you say you don’t like Internet classes in school, because you know everything about it, you have to know the answer to the simple question „What’s the difference between the Internet and the Web?”
I’m giving the 1st year students a simple advice: just be quiet for a while, open your ears, pay attention to the world, be a sponge of knowledge. Just for a while. Then do some reading and some writing and practice. In the end, you can show off with a 3-page CV.
let’s all be a sponge, like George said it clearly and wisely in his post!
