I had the pleasure (?!) to work on the official newsletter of the Education Fair this year, like I did last year.
I was susprised by the constant dimissal of students of all journalistic standards the teachers try to teach them.
First of all, deadline mean nothing for a 1st year student. Although they had to deliver the article in the afternoon, we were calling them just to check and the to-be journalists were at home, in front of the TV set, tasting cocktails and watching cartoons.
Second, they don’t give titles to articles. I guess some teachers still put a lot of pressure on them regarding the title, telling them how important the title is and how intelligent the journalist must be to figure out a title for that poor little article.
Third, Journalism students don’t think it’s very important to write down all correct names and positions of sources. It’s like saying „c’mon, let’s get it done here and I’ll see what I can remember at home”. That’s why most of the articles had to be re-written and the background documentation had to be reconstructed.
Fourth, they don’t feel the need of learning how to take photos. Can you imagine how I felt when waiting for the article/photos to do the layout and realizing I had one article without a title, without proper names of sources and with FILMS instead of photos?
Well, maybe next year it will be better (usually it’s not, but hoping doesn’t cost anything).
Well, I remember the fair I took part in, in my third year. I was one of the skaters, didn’t have anything to do with the magazine, but I don’t remember anyone complaining that much about their work for the newsletter…I guess it gets worse every year.
