Emilia Chiscop, the education and culture editor at Ziarul de Iasi daily newspaper, wrote a piece for TOL, where she gives voice to professors and where she expresses her ideas about the state of education in RO:

To know Romanian has become a strength, to read a book, a sign of erudition.

In the last 10 years, universities have turned from elite to mass institutions.

Professors say they see the effects. The pessimistic dismiss 90 percent of their current students as catastrophes and rejects with the other 10 percent being the equivalent of the top or middle students in previous generations.

„Teachers pretend to teach, students pretend to learn,” said Professor Dumitru Branisteanu of the Iasi medical school. Diplomas earned, he said, do always not reflect real knowledge in the field.
