Shopping bag voyeurism

Romanians like to look in each other’s bag in the street. In the good old communist times, we used to do that because it was a way of finding the source of rare products. “Oh, neighbor, where did you find those paper toilet rolls?” Of course, those who knew somebody who knew somebody who could provide under the counter products, had to use dark, closed bags.

We now look in the bag and then examine the person. “So, five pieces of bread [large family, huh], some meat and some cans [limited choice of recipes?!?], mineral water [and it’s not Izvorul Minunilor, that one that always pops out and pours on the floor making a mess] and beers [why would anyone pay 2,5 lei for a can of beer, since you can find beer in PETs?]”. And then – the person – and a quick evaluation of the amount of money left at the grocery store.

A quick sociological research in the street. A reminiscence and a way of positioning oneself next to a standard.
