Everybody knows about it by now: a young Romanian boy hacked NASA’s computers and he will be prosecuted in the US.

But how much do we know about it? I mean, what did he actually do? „Hack”, „break codes”, „illegal access”, these are not words meant to inform us. For years, the same old stories about hackers emphasize their media-constructed image of „bad guys” who try to take over the world by sitting in front of their computer.

So, what did Faur do? I’m sick and tired of all these second-hand vulgarized stories about hi-tech guys in the Romanian media. And when it comes to people from our own country, journalists don’t think about asking the opinion of the Romanian authorities, as Alina points out. But they do mention that he was prosecuted in Romania for „several felonies” (huh?) and we can read the providential opinion of a neighbor. Ain’t that cute?

So, I guess Faur did something with computers and the NASA. But what?

    Nu era el vre-un geniu informatic, ci serverele Nasa sunt prost securizate. Omu’ era un biet mircoman care sniffuia porturi cu softurile si exploiturile scrise de adevaratii „guru” in c/c++, unix, retele si alte alea. Pur si simplu a avut bafta sa gaseasca vre-un root cu parola aleasa prost.

    Si cred ca ziaristii/ oficialitatile trebuiau sa puna problema in felul urmator: „Daca a comis infractiunea in SUA sa fie judecat in SUA. Da’ pe puscasu’ american care l-a omorat pe Teo Peter de ce nu l-ati lasat sa-l judecam noi?”

    Cand sparge vre-un hacker roman un server Nasa, mass-media romanesti se minuneaza de parca l-am prins pe Dumnezeu de picior.

    Cand sparge vre-un hacker roman un server Nasa americanii ne calca tara si legislatia in picioare ca sa-l salte. Hai facem schimb: Le dam americanilor hecarasu’ nostru si ni-l dau la schimb pe puscasu’ marin, sa-i dam si noi lui 54 de ani de parnaie.

    Deci ne-am lămurit, era un script kiddie. Îţi înţeleg frustrarea legată de Teo Peter, dar nu are legătură cu cazul nostru. Pe acelaşi raţionament, am putea să ne revoltăm că Treptow ăla care se juca cu minore e în închisoare în România, dar ucigaşul lui Peter nu…

    Apropo, corect se scrie „vreun”.
