1st of May – a bitter comedy 2

The theater play called „Comedie roşie” (Red comedy) that I saw Friday evening was very appropriate for the day we „celebrate” today. Although the play was not very inventive or elaborate, it had the merit of touching some sensitive souls in that theater hall. It’s the bitter comedy of an old couple. He was one of the promoters of communism in the country and now he’s persecuted, watched by the Securitate, just because he wanted to follow a certain communist ideology that didn’t relate to Ceausescu’s idea about communism -– hunger, terror, weakening of the people…

Regardless the new trends, I will always see 1st of May as a communist celebration, a time for praising the dictator, boring shows on the 2-hour long television program, my parents being obliged to march in the streets of the city, shouting slogans written on a piece of paper, some new rare products that could be found in shops. I also remember the barbecue after the march, the relative joy in the family as we could eat meat, the half-day off of my parents.

It’’s very sad that today this celebration took the shape of a punk, postmodern symbol. Young people will never know what this day meant some years ago, if al they do is drink vodka, sing communist songs, wear symbols without meanings and go to Vama Veche. But, is it necessary for them to learn about it?

culture-clash! :) Oh George, can’t you see the importance of 1st of May today? As a the day when we put light on the issue of class, the day when we realize there’s a working-class who’s voice is seldom heard, and maybe most important – a day when the capitalist higher classes sees the power of the unpriviliged working-class. A day when the we discuss the terms under which the working-class work and live, and the terms for the immigrants who nowadays make up a huge part of the unpriviligades class…
And… well :) you see I’m getting engaged in this :) Just please let us use the potential of the 1st of May! Love from Sweden, the socialdemocratic utopi…:)

Every celebration reminds us of different, personal things. 1st of May and August 23rd will always remind me of communist prisons, lack of electricity and long lines to buy toilet paper.

I don’t think those younsters that were drinking tequilla and vodka shots in Club A on that day knew anything about the true meaning of the day. And who cares, since it’s a good opportunity to party?
