Fiecare dintre ei – Daster si Hughes – are dreptate in felul lui.

For those who came here via Stuart’s blog:

Give Daster what belongs to Daster

That is – your blogs and your bank accounts… Just kidding!

I just wanted to say that I’m not Daster, given the recent events in the last weeks and the big fuss Daster aroused in the blogosphere.

He linked toward me because I wrote an article about him in the daily Evenimentul zilei, about the vulnerabilities he found on Connex’s websites. We know each other in the online world, we never met in the real world, but I believe I know him better than other bloggers.

Both of them – Daster and Hughes – are right. But a hacker who gives you back the passwords after breaking your blog is a good hacker. In one of his e-mails, Daster said that, if you wrote to a hacker asking him to give back the stolen passwords, he would laugh in your face.

Sure thing, Daster didn’t behave 100%, but Hughes turned this into a tragedy and gave the other people a wrong impression about the incident.

One thing is sure: now the British bloggers learned about the Romanian journalists kinapped in Iraq. Surprisingly, before Daster’s intervention, Hughes hadn’t published anything about the kidnapping on his blog. Although he is a journalist and dealt with the wonderful country of Iraq.

So, citizens, please remain calm: Daster is a white hat.

Sorry, but I cannot agree with your ascertion that Daster is a „Good Hacker”. There can be no such thing as a good hacker. If someone enters your house and takes your wallet, they are charged with theft, whether they use anything in it or not. There is absolutely no difference between that and going into your blog or your computer and taking information that you have NO RIGHT to have.
Stuart has raised many issues on his blog since it began, but one thing this Daster character seems to have forgotten is that it was always a personal blog, which just happens to be carried on the web. If other people read it then so be it, but his intention was to communicate with family and friends. It was not meant to be a political forum for every problem the world has or for highlighting every situation that arises.
So may I humbly suggest the world gets of their own proverbial sopabox and start condemning Daster for what he is, a bully, a thief, a cyber-terrorist, for he is no better than those who rule by fear.

White hat or not, he could bloody well wear it in jail. Since when is blackmailing or electronic ID theft and unlawful disclosure of private data „innocent fun”?
Oh, and let us not mention the minor issue of freedom of speech. It includes the right to shut the hell up when the kapo says „shout”, you know.
    „Cyberculture” my hairy arse!

I’m a US reader of Stuart’s blog and have Romanian family and friends. I know they would never condone Daster’s actions. A blog by definition is a personal journal or diary. The fact that it is on the web means nothing. Daster invaded personal space to force someone to promote his personal peeve. Those of us who don’t like US citizens in harms way in Iraq write to our political representatives, newspapers and protest every Saturday in the street. Daster might try to start campaigning through the newspapers….better yet, why did he not hack into the newspaper websites? Obviously, he feared creating a big problem so he chose a blogger thinking that would come off harmless. Wrong! Your defense of him is weak. So you know him. Good for you. We do not know him, and the only face he should us was the threatening, ugly one. How can you not understand this? Daster chose to provide us with a nasty first impression and now he has no chance with us. Was hacking into Stuart’s blog his only option? I mean really?
